　　When the family of Gotham College Professor Richard Wanley travels, he meets with his close friends Dr. Michael Barkstane and District Attorney Frank Lalor in a club for talking. Wanley is fascinated with the portrait of a young woman in the next door window, and they discuss about affairs and middle-age crisis while drinking. When Wanley leaves the club, he walks to the window to admire the picture once more and he meets Alice Reed, who was the model of the painting. She invites him for a drink and they end the night in her apartment for seeing sketches of Alice made by the same artist. While drinking champagne, her temperable lover arrives and misunderstands the presence of Richard, hitting and suffocating him. In self-defense, Richard stabs the man with a pair of scissors on the back and kills him. They decide to get rid off the body, dumping the body in the woods and destroying the evidences, but when they are blackmailed by the scum Heidt, Professor Wanley tells Alice that there are only three ways to deal with a blackmailer, all of them with a high price.

　　In the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp, the Polish Victoria Kowelska has lost her husband and family in the war. She befriends her fellow citizen Karin Dernakova, who miss her son Chris that lives with her Aunt Sophie in San Francisco. Karin dies three days before the liberation forces commanded by Major Marc Bennett arrive at the camp and Victoria assumes the identity of her friend to emigrate to the United States. However, she is informed that Aunt Sophie has just died and she stays in a camp for survivors. Four years later, she succeeds to go to the United States and meets Sophie’s lawyer. She learns that Alan Spender was assigned Chris’ trustee and he invites her to travel with him to San Francisco to see Chris. Along their journey, they get married to each other and Karin has a cold reception from the housekeeper Margaret that raises Chris at the mansion on Telegraph Hill. Karin meets Major Bennett, who is a friend of Alan, in a party at home and she befriends him. Soon Karin is connected to Chris, but when she has a car accident, she suspects that Alan wants to kill Chris and her to keep the money for him. Is she paranoid?

　　Amateur tennis star Guy Haines (Farley Granger) wants to divorce his vulgar and promiscuous wife Miriam (Laura Elliott), so he can marry the elegant Anne Morton (Ruth Roman), the daughter of a senator, and hopefully have a career in politics. On a train, Haines accidentally meets Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker), who recognizes Guy from the sports pages and knows about his situation from the gossip pages. Bruno tells Guy about his idea for the perfect murder scheme: the two should “swap murders”. Bruno will kill Miriam, and, in exchange, Guy will kill Bruno’s hated father. Each murderer will kill a perfect stranger, having no identifiable motive, so neither will be suspected. Guy does not take Bruno’s suggestion seriously; he humors Bruno by pretending to find it amusing, but Bruno interprets Guy’s response as agreement to the scheme. Guy lets Bruno light a cigarette with his (Guy’s) monogrammed cigarette lighter; instead of returning it, Bruno puts it in his own pocket.
　　Guy meets with Miriam, who is pregnant by someone else. She tells him that she is no longer willing to agree to a divorce. She threatens to follow Guy to Washington, D.C. and cause a scandal. Guy calls Anne with the bad news and, speaking figuratively, tells her he would like to “break [Miriam’s] neck”…that he could “strangle her.” Meanwhile, Bruno follows Miriam and her two beaux to an amusement park, stalks her through various rides, and strangles her to death on the “Magic Isle”. Later, Bruno tells Guy that Miriam is dead and that Guy must honor his part of the deal and kill Bruno’s father. Bruno sends Guy his house key, a map to his father’s room, and a pistol.

　　Temporarily blinded with his eyes bandaged, private detective Philip Marlowe (Dick Powell) is being interrogated by police lieutenant Randall (Don Douglas) about two murders.
　　He tells how he was hired by menacing Moose Malloy (Mike Mazurki) to locate Velma Valento, a former girlfriend of whom Moose lost track while serving eight years in prison. They go to the nightclub where Velma last worked as a singer, but the owner died years earlier, and no one remembers her. Marlowe tracks down Jessie Florian (Esther Howard), the alcoholic widow of the nightclub’s owner eight years ago, who claims not to know what’s become of Velma. However, Marlowe finds a photo of Velma that Jessie hid from him, and she then says Velma is dead. Later, from a safe distance, Marlowe observes a clearly disturbed Jessie make a phone call.
　　The next morning the suave Lindsay Marriott (Douglas Walton) turns up at Marlowe’s office, offering $100 if Marlowe will act as his bodyguard when he goes to a secluded canyon at midnight as a go-between to pay a ransom for some stolen jewels. In the canyon, Marlowe is knocked unconscious. Marlowe comes to when, in a delirious state, he sees a young woman shine a flashlight on his face and run away. The money is gone, and Marriott has been viciously killed. When Marlowe reports the murder, the police make the mistake of asking him if he knows a Jules Amthor and warn him not to interfere in the case.

　　At the age of 14, Bart Tare robs a hardware store and steals a gun. He is sent to reform school by a sympathetic Judge Willoughby (Morris Carnovsky), despite the testimony of his friends Dave and Clyde, his older sister Ruby and others that he would never kill any living creature, even though he has had a fascination with guns even as a child. Flashbacks provide a portrait of Bart who, after he kills a young chick with a BB gun at age seven, is hesitant to harm anyone with guns even though he is a good shot with a pistol.
　　After reform school and a stint in the Army teaching marksmanship, Bart (John Dall) returns home. He, Dave (Nedrick Young) and Clyde (Harry Lewis) go to a traveling carnival in town. Bart challenges sharpshooter Annie Laurie Starr (Peggy Cummins) to a contest and wins. She gets him a job with the carnival, and he becomes smitten with her. Their attraction inflames the jealousy of their boss, Packett (Berry Kroeger), who wants Laurie for himself. As Packett tries to force himself on her, Bart enters and shoots a mirror. Laurie and Bart get fired and leave together.

　　Vincent Parry, a man convicted of killing his wife, has escaped from San Quentin prison by stowing away in a supply truck. He evades police and hitches a ride with a passing motorist named Baker. Parry’s odd clothes and a news report on the radio about an escaped convict make Baker suspicious. When questioned, Parry beats him unconscious. Irene Jansen, who had been painting nearby, picks up Parry and smuggles him past a police roadblock into San Francisco, offering him shelter in her apartment.
　　Madge, an acquaintance of Jansen, comes by Irene’s apartment. Parry, without opening the door, tells her to go away. Madge was a former romantic interest of Parry’s whom he had spurned. Out of spite she testified at his trial, providing a motive as to why he would have killed his wife.
　　When Irene returns, she explains that she had followed Parry’s case with interest. Her own father had been falsely convicted of murder, and since then she has taken an interest in miscarriages of justice. She believes that Parry is innocent.
　　Parry leaves but is recognized by a cab driver, Sam. The man turns out to be sympathetic and gives Parry the name of a plastic surgeon who can change his appearance.

　　Black Angel begins as we zoom up to a swanky apartment building in Los Angeles as Marvis Marlowe (Constance Dowling) is primping and berating her maid for putting the wrong music on the phonograph. The recording of the song Heartbreak reminds her of her musician husband Martin Blair (Dan Duryea) who wrote the song and is standing downstairs barred from entering by the doorman. When Martin sees the doorman allow Marko (Peter Lorre) up to Marvis apartment he gives up and walks away. Martin and Marvis were married at one time but now she refuses to meet with him which causes emotional reactions in Martin so great that he goes on a drunken bender before going to his current piano-playing job at Als Place, a local saloon. When Martins best friend and custodian shows up, he takes the hapless musician away and locks him in his apartment to sleep it off. In the meanwhile Kirk Bennett (John Phillips) goes to Marvis apartment and discovers the femme fetale dead on the floor and the seeming presence of someone just exiting the apartment.

　　New York City police detective Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) is investigating the murder of beautiful, and highly successful, advertising executive, Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney). Laura has been killed by a shotgun blast to the face, just inside the doorway to her apartment, before the start of the film. He interviews charismatic newspaper columnist Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb), an imperious, decadent dandy, who relates how he met Laura, became her mentor, and used his considerable influence and fame to advance her career. McPherson also questions Laura’s parasitic playboy fiancé, Shelby Carpenter (Vincent Price), her wealthy socialite aunt, Ann Treadwell (Judith Anderson), who’d been carrying on with Carpenter and giving him money, and her loyal housekeeper, Bessie Clary (Dorothy Adams).
　　Through the testimony of her friends, and the reading of her letters and diary, McPherson comes to know Laura and slowly becomes obsessed with her, so much so Lydecker accuses him of falling in love with the dead woman. He also learns that Lydecker was jealous of Laura’s suitors, using his newspaper column and influence to keep them at bay. One night, the detective falls asleep in Laura’s apartment, under her portrait, and is awakened by the sound of someone entering the apartment. He is shocked to discover it is Laura. Laura finds a dress in her closet belonging to one of her models, Diane Redfern. McPherson concludes that she, Diane Redfern, was the victim, brought there by Carpenter, while Laura was away in the country. Now it becomes even more urgent to unmask the murderer.
　　A party is thrown to welcome Laura’s return. At the party, McPherson arrests Laura for the murder of Diana Redfern.

However, Johnny repeatedly warns Tony not to mess with the Irish gangs led by O’Hara, who runs the North Side. Tony soon ignores these orders, barraging bars belonging to O’Hara, and attracting attention of the police and rival gangsters. Johnny realizes Tony is out of control and aspires to take his position.
　　Meanwhile, Tony pursues Johnny’s girlfriend Poppy with increasing confidence. At first, she is dismissive of him but pays him more attention as his reputation rises. 　　The story follows the life of struggling young Hollywood screenwriter Joe Gillis (Holden) as he is ensnared by long-forgotten silent-film star Norma Desmond (Swanson) into being her kept man. The film begins with a scene of Joe’s dead body floating in the swimming pool of Norma’s palatial mansion on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood before flashing back to the beginning of the story’s events. Joe narrates the film even though he is no longer alive.
　　The first few scenes describe Joe’s unsuccessful efforts to borrow money from his friends after failing to convince Paramount Pictures producer Sheldrake (Clark) to buy his most recent script, which Sheldrake’s assistant Betty Shaefer (Olson) dislikes. Joe’s meeting with Norma and her stoic German butler Max (von Stroheim) is occasioned by a car chase in which he flees from repossession men, having fallen behind on his loan payments. When one of his car’s tires blows out in front of Norma’s mansion, he hides the car in her garage, and when he tells her he is a writer, she asks him to help her write a script for a film that she hopes will revive her faded acting career.
　　With no other options except a low-paying newspaper job in Ohio, Joe agrees to help Norma. He objects when she has Max move his belongings from his apartment to her mansion, but she has paid his overdue rent, so he accepts the situation and begins living at the mansion, first in a room over the garage, then in the mansion itself.
